Boilermaker Special Accident; Purdue University’s Boilermaker Special involved in fatal crash

The Boilermaker Special, the official mascot of Purdue University, has been involved in a fatal crash on Thursday afternoon in rural Tippecanoe County, the sheriff’s office says.

The county coroner’s office as of about 6 p.m. Thursday had not yet identified the car’s driver who died in the crash, said a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Two people aboard the Boilermaker Special were taken to a Lafayette hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Purdue reported Thursday night that the two students were treated and released from the hospital.

Photos from the crash show the crumpled remains of the front of the replica of the Victorian-era locomotive, and a car.

The release says the crash with a car happened just before 4 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of U.S. 52 and Wyandotte Road near Lafayette. That’s about a 20-minute drive southeast of the Purdue University campus in West Lafayette.

The Boilermaker Special travels to both home and away football games, and other special sports events and campus activities. The Purdue Reamer Club operates the replica locomotive.
