Zanir Childs Shooting; Brooklyn Double Shooting Leaves 18 Years Old Man Dead, Woman Injured And Suspects At Large

Police in Brooklyn are looking for the suspects behind a double shooting on Saturday night – the borough’s second in less than 36 hours — that left an 18-year-old man dead and a woman seriously injured.

The shooting happened near a home on the 800 block of New Jersey Avenue, across the way from the P.S. 36 playground, in East New York, just before 10 p.m. on May 17.

Officers from the 75th Precint, in responding to a 911 call about the incident, located Zanir Childs, 18, of Wortman Avenue in Brooklyn, who had suffered a gunshot wound to his torso. Members of Engine Company 290, who also responded to render aid initially, found the victim in cardiac arrest.

First responders also located the second victim, an 18-year-old woman with a bullet wound to her right. EMS rushed her to Brookdale University Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.

Throughout Saturday night and into early Sunday morning, police officers and detectives pored over the crime scene, locating multiple shell casings as well as a bicycle taken in as evidence.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown at this time. No arrests have been made in the ongoing investigation.

Saturday’s shooting followed a similar incident that occurred on Friday afternoon near a basketball court in Crown Heights, which left two men hospitalized in stable condition.

The 75th Precinct had reported 13 shootings year-to-date through May 11, down from 17 such incidents at the same point in 2024. The command also had four homicides year-to-date.
