Matt Eckert Obituary-Death News; Walkerton Mourn Loss Of Teacher And 4 Other Student In Car Accident
Walkerton District Community School is mourning the devastating loss of four students and a beloved teacher, Matt Eckert, who died in a car crash Friday afternoon.
The group was returning from a school softball tournament in Dorchester when their SUV collided with a transport truck near Thorndale. All five occupants were killed.
“They were amazing, bright students,” said Grade 13 student Josh Flood. “And Mr. Eckert always had a smile. He knew how to cheer you up.”
Eckert was not only a teacher and coach at the school but also an assistant coach for the Owen Sound Junior B Northstars Lacrosse Club. His death has deeply shaken the close-knit community.
In response, residents are placing sneakers, teddy bears, and lights on their doorsteps to honor the victims. “Let the families know we care,” said local parent Tim Lowe.
Premier Doug Ford and the Bluewater District School Board expressed condolences, calling the crash a heartbreaking loss.
Walkerton, still scarred by the 2000 E. coli tragedy, is once again facing grief. Mayor Chris Peabody acknowledged the community’s resilience but admitted, “There’s going to be deep scars from this.”
A candlelight vigil will be held at the school Sunday at dusk. Grief counselors will be available for students and staff on Monday.
