Justin Minnitee Obituary-Death News; 2 People Dies after Shooting at Coan Park in Atlanta during Fraternity Gathering
A tragic shooting at Coan Park in Atlanta on Saturday evening has left two men dead and two others injured, according to the Atlanta Police Department (APD). The incident unfolded just before 8 p.m. during what officials say was a permitted fraternity gathering. Authorities are continuing to investigate the sequence of events that led to the deadly violence and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
According to APD Homicide Commander Lt. Andrew Smith, the incident began when a man, who was not invited to the private fraternity event, showed up at the park. His presence sparked an argument with attendees, which quickly escalated. During the confrontation, at least two individuals drew firearms, resulting in a chaotic exchange of gunfire.
“From what we know at this point, there was an uninvited guest that arrived to the location, which led to a confrontation, which led to guns being produced and shots being fired between the two individuals,” said Lt. Smith during a press briefing.
When the gunfire stopped, multiple victims were left wounded. One of the victims, identified as 33-year-old Anthony Pearson, suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, 23-year-old Justin Minnitee, was shot multiple times and rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. Sadly, despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
In addition to the two fatalities, two more individuals sustained injuries during the shooting. According to police, they transported themselves to the hospital. One of the victims is reportedly in stable condition, while the other suffered a graze wound and is expected to recover.
The shooting has left the community in shock, particularly those who were gathered for what was intended to be a peaceful evening of fellowship and celebration. Coan Park, located in East Atlanta, is a popular recreational spot often used for family gatherings, sports, and community events. Residents expressed disbelief and concern that such violence could erupt in a public space where many families and children frequently gather.
“This was supposed to be a positive event,” said one witness who asked to remain anonymous. “Nobody expects to hear gunshots at a park on a Saturday night, especially not during a fraternity gathering. It’s just heartbreaking.”
APD homicide detectives are actively investigating the case, reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and working to identify everyone involved. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any arrests have been made or if they have identified the individuals who fired the weapons. Police are also looking into whether the weapons involved were legally owned and how the altercation escalated so rapidly.
The Atlanta Police Department is asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Tipsters can contact the department directly or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers Atlanta.
As the investigation continues, the families of Anthony Pearson and Justin Minnitee are left to grieve the sudden and senseless loss of their loved ones. The community joins them in mourning and in calling for peace, accountability, and justice.
The shooting at Coan Park marks yet another somber reminder of the urgent need to address gun violence and community safety. For now, residents are left grappling with fear, sorrow, and unanswered questions as law enforcement works to bring clarity and justice to this devastating situation.
