F. Dennis Alvarez, J.D., beloved son of Tampa, passed away suddenly on June 13, 2025 at the age of 79. Born in Tampa in 1945, Dennis was the proud son of Spanish‑ and Italian‑heritage cigar workers. His roots remained central to his identity, and he carried his heritage with pride throughout his life.
After graduating with his J.D. from South Texas College of Law in 1974, Dennis was admitted to the Florida Bar. This marked the beginning of an illustrious career in the legal profession. He transitioned from private practice to the judiciary in 1980, when he was elected as a judge for the Hillsborough County Court.
Just four years later, in 1984, he ascended to the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit Court bench. His reputation for fairness and intelligence led to his appointment as Chief Judge of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit, a position he held with distinction from 1988 until his retirement in 2001.
During his thirteen-year tenure as chief judge, Dennis spearheaded numerous judicial reforms in Florida’s third-largest circuit. He championed local initiatives such as televised court hearings, a youth-focused “rocket docket” to alleviate juvenile case backlogs, and early versions of juvenile drug and adult drug courts. He also supported programs targeting domestic violence, elder justice, and family education—all of which earned regional and national recognition.
After retiring, Dennis shifted focus to alternative dispute resolution. Based at Genders Alvarez in Tampa, he excelled as a court-certified mediator and arbitrator. Over two decades, he mediated more than 5,000 civil disputes, earning respect for his deep empathy and commitment to conflict resolution .
His leadership extended beyond the courtroom: he chaired the Florida Conference of Circuit Court Judges, was appointed by the Florida Supreme Court to several commissions, and contributed to statewide and local bar associations.
Dennis also received numerous honors, including the George Edgecomb Humanitarian Award, Hispanic Man of the Year, and accolades from the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers and the Robert J. Patton Outstanding Jurist Award.
