It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Derek Ray Bish, age 33, of Clear Spring, Maryland. Derek departed this life on July 24, 2025, leaving behind a community forever changed by his dedication and spirit.
Born on October 17, 1991, Derek grew up in the Hagerstown area, where he fostered a deep passion for public safety and service. Early on, friends and family recognized his empathy, focus, and unwavering drive to help others.
Derek answered the call to serve when he joined Washington County’s 911 Communications team. He transitioned to full‑time employment on June 25, 2016, and over the years rose through the ranks. On April 4, 2020, he was promoted to Emergency Communications Specialist III, and most recently served as ECS Shift Supervisor—a testament to his leadership, professionalism, and calm under pressure.
As an Emergency Communications Specialist, Derek was the unseen lifeline in emergencies—coordinating response efforts, dispatching first responders, and offering reassurance to callers in their darkest moments. His voice, composed and steady, became synonymous with reliability and care. Known for mentoring newer team members, Derek took pride in nurturing a culture of excellence at the center.
Colleagues remember him not only for his technical skills and composure under stress, but for his warmth, humor, and unfailing kindness. He was someone who listened fully, encouraged tirelessly, and instilled confidence in others.
Outside of work, Derek was deeply connected with family and friends. He relished time spent outdoors in the Hagerstown area—whether hiking local trails, watching Maryland fall colors, or gathering for backyard barbecues. He loved music, good food, and the laughter shared over board games surrounded by loved ones.
Derek is survived by his parents—Dennis Ray Bish of Hagerstown and Connie Dean Litz (Oxendine) of Brunswick—along with his siblings Brian, Jennifer, Denise, Allison, and Cody, each of whom cherished him beyond words. He also leaves behind a treasured circle of extended family, close friends, and the community he served.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and by longtime friend David Sexton, reflecting how deeply Derek valued relationships and how richly he was loved in return.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, August 11, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Washington County Public Safety Training Center, 18350 Public Safety Place, Hagerstown, MD. A reception will follow at 2:00 PM at the same venue. All who knew Derek are invited to attend, honor his memory, and find comfort in shared stories.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions be made in Derek’s name to your local volunteer firehouse—or to any first‑responder organization—reflecting his lifelong devotion to emergency service.
