Dr. Mark A. Dayton, a 70-year-old Bloomington-based cancer specialist, tragically died on August 11 when he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in Lawrence County.
The accident occurred around 1 p.m. at the Judah intersection of Indiana 37 and Old Indiana 37, approximately 15 miles south of Bloomington near the Johnny Junxions service station. Dayton, who resided near Lake Monroe in southern Monroe County, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Dayton was a respected member of the Bloomington North Rotary Club, having served for 18 years. He was known for his active engagement in community discussions, notably speaking about America’s healthcare system during recent political administrations.
The Rotary Club mourned his loss, highlighting his significant impact on community health, education, and social justice. The preliminary police report indicates that a 26-year-old man from Mitchell, driving a 2012 Chrysler 200 southbound on Indiana 37, ran a red light at the busy intersection.
Witnesses reported that Dayton was riding west on Old Indiana 37 with a green light when the collision occurred. The driver was uninjured and underwent standard testing for alcohol or drugs, as is customary in fatal accidents.
Indiana State Police and accident reconstruction experts are investigating the circumstances further, with the official report pending. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about traffic safety and the importance of vigilance at busy intersections.
