The Encinitas community is grieving the tragic loss of 12-year-old Emery Chalekian, who was fatally struck by a vehicle while crossing the street on Friday evening, April 25, 2025.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:51 p.m. at the intersection of Encinitas Boulevard and Village Square Drive. Emery was walking in the crosswalk when a Nissan Xterra, involved in a collision with a Ford Fusion, veered off course and struck her.

Despite immediate emergency response, Emery was pronounced dead at the scene. Both drivers remained at the scene and are cooperating with authorities. Preliminary investigations indicate that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is continuing its investigation. Emery was a beloved student at Park Dale Lane Elementary School, known for her radiant smile, compassionate nature, and enthusiasm for learning.

She had a deep love for animals, played the flute, and had recently started a friendship bracelet business with her best friend. Her teachers described her as an “old soul” with a gentle spirit.

In honor of Emery, the school community organized a memorial where students and staff wore yellow, her favorite color, and created a tribute filled with flowers, notes, and artwork.

To support the Chalekian family during this difficult time, a Meal Train has been established, allowing community members to provide meals, gift cards, and other forms of assistance.

The family has expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support, stating, “Emery was the light of our lives. Her smile brought joy to everyone she met. We are devastated beyond words.”

Emery’s untimely passing serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of pedestrian safety, especially in areas frequented by children. Her vibrant spirit and the love she shared with those around her will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
