Born into the cherished Cross family, Gonda was the daughter of the late J.D. and Edna Cross, who raised their children with strong values, unwavering faith, and a commitment to hard work. As one of six sisters—Brenda, Ursula, Chloe, Marilynn, the late Sharon Cross, and Barbara Alexander—Gonda shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and unbreakable bonds. Their sibling connection was rooted in a legacy of strength, resilience, and sisterhood that sustained them through the highs and lows of life.
Gonda’s family was deeply woven into the fabric of Clarksdale’s history. The Cross family proudly operated the Bates Hotel and Tip Top Cab, two landmark businesses in downtown Clarksdale that not only served the local community but also stood as symbols of Black entrepreneurship and pride during a time when such successes were hard-won. These businesses were more than establishments—they were gathering places, safe havens, and emblems of progress. Gonda grew up surrounded by this legacy of service and perseverance, and she carried it with her throughout her life.
Her connection to Clarksdale’s educational legacy was also profound. Gonda was the niece of the late Dr. Katie Wallace, a long-standing and well-respected principal who left an indelible mark on the city’s schools and the generations of students she guided with compassion and integrity. Gonda carried this educational and familial torch with grace and pride.
A proud graduate of Clarksdale High School’s Class of 1975, Gonda embodied the spirit of her alma mater with a heart full of pride and a mind always set on growth. She held her school days close and maintained friendships that endured through the decades. Her high school years were marked by intelligence, creativity, and a quiet strength that blossomed as she journeyed into adulthood.
Those who knew Gonda remember her not only for her connections and accomplishments but also for her soul—gentle yet strong, thoughtful and wise, with a quiet dignity that made an impression on all who met her. She had a calm presence and a compassionate heart. Her laughter could light a room, and her listening ear brought comfort to countless friends and family over the years.
