Kayshawn Wilkerson Ocala, Fla, Shooting: Navy Recruit, 18, Dies from Self-Inflicted Gunshot at Naval Station Great Lakes

Authorities have confirmed the death of 18-year-old Navy recruit Kayshawn Wilkerson, of Ocala, Fla., following a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois on Wednesday.

According to the Lake County Coroner’s Office, emergency crews from the base’s fire and police departments responded around 1:45 p.m. to a report of a gunshot victim at a firing range. First responders found Wilkerson with a gunshot wound to the head and pronounced him dead at the scene. A preliminary autopsy determined the wound was self-inflicted.

Wilkerson was assigned to the Recruit Training Command at Naval Station Great Lakes, which serves as the Navy’s only boot camp and its largest training installation.

“The Navy is providing full support to the family, friends, and shipmates affected by this tragic loss,” said Lt. Beau Nickerson, spokesman for Naval Service Training Command.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) and the Lake County Coroner’s Office are conducting a joint investigation into the incident.

No further details have been released as officials continue to review the circumstances surrounding Wilkerson’s death.
