Ken Symonds Obituary-Death News; Captain Ken Symonds, Flair’s Third-Ever Employee Passed Away Tragically
Ken Symonds, born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2025, while on a sailing adventure near Tonga Island. He was 67 years old.
His passing leaves a void in the hearts of family, friends, and all who knew him, yet his legacy of kindness, adventure, and generosity continues to inspire. Ken was a man who never sat still for long. From a young age, his restless spirit and thirst for exploration set him apart.
He was passionate about travel in all its forms — whether charting courses across open waters, camping deep in the backcountry, or simply boarding a plane to discover new horizons.
Adventure was not just an occasional pursuit for Ken; it was a way of life. His boundless energy and enthusiasm for the world fueled countless stories and experiences that he shared with a twinkle in his eye and an infectious laugh.
Physically active and good-humoured, Ken was known among friends and family for his athleticism and patience. On the sports field, he was a regular participant in tennis and field hockey, always bringing a competitive spirit wrapped in camaraderie.
Off the field, he was a devoted fan of the Buffalo Bills, standing by the team through thick and thin, displaying loyalty and passion just as he did in every aspect of his life.
Music was another of Ken’s loves; on quiet evenings or when inspiration struck, he would sit down at the piano and play classic rock ’n’ roll tunes, filling the room with the warmth of familiar melodies and his unmistakable joy.
Ken’s professional life was deeply connected to his love of flying. His career began in the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he quickly earned a reputation as a skilled and steady pilot.
One of his proudest roles was piloting the Hercules — a four-engine turboprop aircraft known for its ability to carry heavy cargo into some of the most remote and challenging environments on earth.
The Hercules was a perfect match for Ken’s calm demeanor, reliability, and leadership. His time in the military was marked by both professionalism and a sharp sense of humour that endeared him to his colleagues.
After serving in the Air Force, Ken transitioned into commercial aviation, spending 20 years flying for Flair Airlines. Here, he combined his love for flying with his desire to connect with the world, guiding passengers safely to destinations near and far.
His dedication to his craft was evident, as was his passion for the skies and the freedom they offered. He was not only a pilot but a mentor and friend to many in the aviation community.
Beyond his remarkable career and adventurous lifestyle, Ken was most remembered for his generosity and kindness. He was the person people turned to — always reliable without needing recognition, quietly thoughtful without making a fuss.
He had a unique ability to notice the little things that made others feel valued and seen. Whether offering a listening ear or a helping hand, Ken gave his full attention and made everyone around him feel important. His warmth and sincerity left an indelible mark on all who crossed his path.
Ken is survived by his brothers Malcolm and Bruce, and his nephews Chris and James, who will cherish his memory and the many ways he enriched their lives.
Friends and family recall Ken’s character with heartfelt stories that speak volumes. One friend shared, “Shocked, saddened, and a lot of other words at the news that this man has passed on.
He was a dear friend to Scott with such an incredible heart and demeanor to make everyone better and happier that stood beside him. You were a star at our wedding, and last year drove four hours last minute, saying ‘I can make it,’ to Scott’s 50th birthday celebrations.
That meant a lot to Scott and showed what he would do for his friends — anything. An amazing pilot, unbelievable musician, and a phenomenal human being that is already missed and will continue to be. We are lucky to have known you. Rest in peace, Ken Symonds.”
A service to celebrate Ken’s life will be held at a later date, giving loved ones an opportunity to come together and honor the remarkable man he was.
Memorial donations in Ken’s name can be made to Royal Roads University, reflecting his commitment to lifelong learning and community. Ken Symonds’ life was an extraordinary journey marked by adventure, skill, and an unwavering generosity of spirit.
He will be deeply missed, but his memory will continue to inspire those who knew him to live fully, love generously, and embrace each new day with the same zest for life that defined him.
