Nathan Paul Bailey Obituary-Death News; Nathan Paul Bailey, Maine National Guard Officer, Dies

Nathan Paul Bailey, age 70, of Clinton, and more recently of Saco and Old Orchard Beach, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 6, 2025. Nate, as he was affectionately known, lived a life marked by service, quiet strength, and a deep devotion to his family, friends, and country.

Born on January 12, 1955, in Bangor, Maine, Nate was the beloved son of Paul and Margaret Beale Bailey. His early life was shaped by a rich variety of experiences, beginning with his childhood years in Seville, Spain, where his father was stationed.

He continued his schooling in Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts, before the Bailey family settled back in Clinton, Maine, a place Nate always called home. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1973 and shortly thereafter answered the call to service by enlisting in the United States Army.

Following his initial enlistment, Nate earned a ROTC scholarship to the University of Maine at Orono. He graduated with a degree in Political Science and was commissioned as an officer in the Maine National Guard.

His service eventually led him to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he built a new chapter of his life. There, he worked in both banking and nonprofit sectors, while continuing his military service in the Louisiana National Guard.

His leadership and dedication were recognized with a promotion to captain, and during the Gulf War, he commanded a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) unit in Kuwait as part of Operation Desert Storm—a role he carried out with honor and distinction.

After his military service, Nate returned to Clinton to support a family business, eventually relocating it to Portland. It was during this time that he met and married Ellen Berube.

Together, they raised two children, Gabrielle Anne and Travis Pat, who brought him immense pride and joy. He relished the role of father and later, grandfather to Gabby’s children, Aaliya and Ashton. His love for his family was evident in everything he did.

In his later years, Nate settled in Old Orchard Beach, where he found fulfillment in community service and simple pleasures. He became the proud commander of American Legion Post 57, where he helped lead charitable efforts, supported fellow veterans, and created a space for camaraderie and support.

He particularly enjoyed Bingo nights, beach walks, and getting to know the shopkeepers and neighbors who gave the town its charm. His presence in the community was quiet but impactful, and his absence will be deeply felt.

Nate was predeceased by his parents, his brother Sheridan, and his sister Paula. He is survived by his son Travis of Tampa, Florida; his daughter Gabby of Biddeford, Maine; and his grandchildren Aaliya and Ashton.

He also leaves behind his brother Matthew and nieces Nina, Camila, Rachael, and Isabelle, as well as many dear friends and fellow veterans who will remember his kindness, humor, and steady presence.

A memorial service to honor Nate’s life will be held on July 20 at American Legion Post 57 in Old Orchard Beach. All who knew and loved him are welcome to attend and share in remembering a life well lived—a life marked by courage, loyalty, and deep compassion.
