The community is mourning the loss of retired New York City Police Department detective Salvatore A. Buscemi, who was found dead this morning from an apparent suicide, according to law enforcement officials.
Buscemi, a longtime Brooklyn native who later made his home in North Massapequa, was remembered as a dedicated officer, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a trusted friend to many.
A proud graduate of Automotive High School and later the State University of New York at Farmingdale, Buscemi devoted much of his life to public service. He served with distinction as a detective in the NYPD before his retirement, earning the respect of his colleagues and the community he worked to protect.
Those close to him say that beyond his career in law enforcement, Salvatore Buscemi was deeply rooted in family and community. He was known for his warmth, loyalty, and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. The West Islip, New York man died from a self-inflicted injury.
News of Sal’s death has left friends, family, and fellow officers stunned and heartbroken. Many described him as the kind of person who would go out of his way to help others, even while silently facing his own struggles.
Authorities confirmed that his death is being investigated as an apparent suicide.
