Stacey McCann Obituary-Death News; Middletown Assistant Schools Superintendent Found Dead At Her Home In Windsor, Police Say

Stacey McCann, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning, for Middletown public schools, died Monday at her home in Windsor, police said.

McCann was found Monday afternoon, according to a Windsor police spokesman.  The department is working with the chief medical examiner’s office to determine a cause of death, but foul play is not suspected, the spokesman said.

“In times like these, words often fall short of capturing the depth of our collective grief,” Superintendent of Schools Alberto Vázquez Matos said in a letter to families and staff.

“Dr. McCann was an extraordinary educator whose passion for her work was both inspiring and contagious. She began each day with seemingly boundless energy and a conviction that all students can and will succeed. You may recall her often saying, “We are in service of schools.” This wasn’t just a phrase for Dr. McCann; rather, it was a guiding principle that shaped her work.”

He said that “in the coming days, we will share information about memorial services and opportunities to honor Dr. McCann’s life and legacy.”

“For now, I ask that you keep her family in your thoughts and continue the important work she was so passionate about,” said Vázquez Matos.

McCann began work in Middletown in 2022. She had supervisory and leadership responsibilities and leadership responsibilities for building principals, assistant principals, curriculum directors and supervisors spanning the PreK-12 academic environment and all teaching and learning aspects of the district, according to a press release from the district at the time she was hired.

She was also responsible for oversight of integrated and collaborative after-school programs and summer programs.

Prior to joining Middletown schools, McCann had been a teacher, literacy facilitator, turnaround specialist, assistant principal, principal, executive principal, director of literacy, director of school improvement, and assistant superintendent during her 25 year career.

McCann worked in Bloomfield for a decade before joining Middletown schools.
