Zach Scothorn Obituary-Death News; Altoona Man Dies after Fatal Accident on I-80
With heavy hearts, we share the deeply saddening news of the untimely passing of Zachary Scott Scothorn, a 19-year-old beloved student at Iowa State University, who tragically lost his life in a fatal traffic accident on the early morning of August 15, 2025.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident occurred around 1:35 a.m. on Interstate 80, just west of Exit 141 in Polk County. Zach was driving a 2013 Toyota Tacoma when, for reasons still under investigation, he crossed into the eastbound lanes of I-80 and collided with a 2023 Dodge 3500.
Both vehicles were struck again in quick succession by a 2013 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van. Tragically, Zach—who was not wearing a seat belt—died at the scene. The drivers of the other vehicles and a passenger were injured and taken to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines (KJAN, KCCI).
Zach’s passing comes as a shock to his family, friends, and classmates at Iowa State University. As a student in Ames, he was known as someone eager to learn, kind in spirit, and vibrant in presence.
